Renewables overtake coal and widen their lead in 2026

From January to June, 35.8% of the world’s electricity came from sun, wind, water and biomass, against 32.2% from coal. Renewables overtook coal in 2025 for the first time in a century, and this year the gap has grown from 1.6 to 3.6 points. The International Energy Agency expects renewables to reach 43% by 2030.
