Basque cavers recover Iberia's only complete skeleton of a young cave lion

Cavers from the Burumendi group found it in 2023 in a new gallery of the Ormola cave in Mendaro, in Spain's Basque Country: a male cave lion that died aged 2 or 3, about 31,500 years ago. The Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, which unveiled it on 3 November, says it is the first complete skeleton of a subadult of the species found on the Iberian Peninsula. The research is still under way, including a DNA study.

Scientists crack the code of a 400-year-old padlock from a shipwreck: it was ANCE

The Ann Francis was wrecked on Margam beach, in Wales, on 28 December 1583 on its way back from Spain. Museum Wales and Cardiff University have looked inside the brass combination lock it carried, using micro-CT scanning and without damaging it: the letters were A-N-C-E. What the word means is still unknown.

Spanish scientists halve aphid-spread crop viruses with a harmless decoy particle

Researchers at Spain's Institute of Agricultural Sciences (ICA-CSIC) and the Centre for Plant Biotechnology and Genomics (CBGP) have designed empty, non-infectious virus-like nanoparticles that take up the spot in an aphid's mouthparts where viruses attach. In the lab they cut transmission of two crop viruses by about half, without killing the insects. The method has not yet been tested in the field; CSIC has applied for a European patent.
